Tom, the eldest son of the JoadFamily, finds himself in a unique when he must leave his home and head out toCalifornia with his family. As Tom and his family headed West on their journey, hefound himself as the leader of the family after his grandpa had died and his fatherwas not thinking straight. Throughout the journey, Tom and his mother took care of thefamily and did the best they could to maintain order in the family. Tom was a good, reasonable person. Sure he had been locked in Prison for fouryears, but that was only because he got in a drunken fight and killed a man with ashovel. But Tom was only defending himself, he didnt mean to kill the man, but he did. In prison, Tom kept to himself and didnt talk much. He probably figured that was theonly way he was going to get out of prison sooner. And his patience paid off, because hewas released in four years, instead of seven. When Tom got home, he realized thatnothing was left. All of the houses were torn down and everyone was gone. If Tom hadntseen his old neighbor Muley, he might have never seen his family again. After Muley hadtold Tom that his family was with his Uncle John, he set out to his Uncles house withhis old friend, Casy. As soon as Toms mother saw him standing in the doorway, she wasso happy that Her head sank slowly to her side and the fork she was holding in herhand hit the floor (Steinbeck 80). After Tom had re-acquainted himself with everyone inhis family, they all sat down and had breakfast. After breakfast, they all discussed andplanned their journey to California. The trip was along one, But Tom and his family managed to get there. Unfortunately, Toms familysuffered many losses. There were bathrooms, showers, and placesto wash clothes. Tom and his family lived for only a month. They would have stayedlonger, but the family could not find work. So Tom and his family set off. They hadheard of some possible work not too far away. When they got to Hooper Ranch, the copslined them up on the road and sent them in to the ranch. The work there wasnt sogood. They were paid five cents for every box of peaches that they picked. Things wouldnot have gotten so bad if Tom had not attacked a cop. But Tom only did it in selfdefense. Besides, the cop that he hurt had killed his old friend Casy, right in front of hi sface. Tom had met up with Casy the night that he hurt the cop. It turns out that Casyhad gotten to Hooper Ranch before Tom and his family. Casy said that when he arrived, they were offering only two and a half cents per box of peaches. So, Casy and his newfriends protested. Thats why the wage went up to five cents, because were needed to pickthe peaches. But as soon as the cops stopped the protest, the wage was going back downto two and a half cents. Well after Tom had been beaten for what he did, he went backto his shelter and told his family what had happened. They all decided that they shouldleave immediately. But Tom hesitated. He knew that if they left, the cops would belooking for him. But Toms mother would not let him leave. She pleaded him to stay andfinally Tom agreed. He probably realized that he would be better off with his family forthe time being. So the Joad family left Hooper Ranch and set off to someplace else. Onthe road, the Joad family found a place where there we re many abandoned boxcars wherethey could live. They settled down there and began looking for a job. They found a jobpicking cotton, but that job soon was gone because of all the people that were picking. Tom on the other hand, was hiding. He had agreed with his mother to stay hidden atleast until his wounds healed up. Tom didnt like the idea, he still preferred going offsomewhere in his own, but he agreed to stay. Toms secrecy was soon broken when hissister Ruthie had threatened a girl that her big brother would beat up the other girlsbrother. But also Ruthie also mentioned that he had already killed two men and was outhiding waiting to kill another. As soon as Mrs. Joad heard about this, she knew she hadto tell her son to flee. Tom was not too happy about her offering him money to leave, but he knew it was for the best, so he took the money. After Mrs. Joad returned to theboxcars, it began to rain heavily and the cars became flooded. The Joad family knew theyhad to leave, so they did. The family found A rain-blackened barn that was just acrossthe highway (Steinbeck 498). The family went there and received shelter from the heavyrain. In conclusion, Tom was a person who took responsibility for his actions. He tookcare of his family when they needed him the most, but in the end, he did what was bestfor the family, he left them. He knew that if he had stayed, he would have only been aburden to them because the cops would have been looking for him. Besides, he knew thathe would have put his family in danger if he had stayed. .u81eea322d5fb2025df60457b82d4df34 , .u81eea322d5fb2025df60457b82d4df34 .postImageUrl , .u81eea322d5fb2025df60457b82d4df34 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u81eea322d5fb2025df60457b82d4df34 , .u81eea322d5fb2025df60457b82d4df34:hover , .u81eea322d5fb2025df60457b82d4df34:visited , .u81eea322d5fb2025df60457b82d4df34:active { border:0!important; } .u81eea322d5fb2025df60457b82d4df34 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u81eea322d5fb2025df60457b82d4df34 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u81eea322d5fb2025df60457b82d4df34:active , .u81eea322d5fb2025df60457b82d4df34:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u81eea322d5fb2025df60457b82d4df34 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u81eea322d5fb2025df60457b82d4df34 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u81eea322d5fb2025df60457b82d4df34 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u81eea322d5fb2025df60457b82d4df34 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u81eea322d5fb2025df60457b82d4df34:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u81eea322d5fb2025df60457b82d4df34 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u81eea322d5fb2025df60457b82d4df34 .u81eea322d5fb2025df60457b82d4df34-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u81eea322d5fb2025df60457b82d4df34:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Racial Profiling EssayBibliographyWorks CitedSteinbeck, John. Animal essays

Animal essays George Orwell's Animal Farm is a political satire of a totalitarian society ruled by a mighty dictatorship, in all probability an allegory for the events surrounding the Russian Revolution of 1917. The animals of "Manor Farm" overthrow their human master after a long history of mistreatment. Led by the pigs, the farm animals continue to do their work, only with more pride, knowing that they are working for themselves, as opposed to working for humans. Little by little, the pigs become dominant, gaining more power and advantage over the other animals, so much so that they become as corrupt and power-hungry as their predecessors, the humans. The theme in Animal Farm maintains that in every society there are leaders who, if given the opportunity, will The book begins in the barnyard of Mr. Jones' "Manor Farm". The animals congregate at a meeting led by the prize white boar, Major. Major points out to the assembled animals that no animal in England is free. He further explains that the products of their labor is stolen by man, who alone benefits. Man, in turn, gives back to the animals the bare minimum which will keep them from starvation while he profits from the rest. The old boar tells them that the source of all their problems is man, and that they must remove man from their midst to abolish tyranny and hunger. Days later Major dies, but the hope and pride which he gave the other animals does not die. Under the leadership of the pigs, the most intelligent of the animals, they rebel against their human master managing to overthrow him. After the rebellion, under the direction of Napoleon, the most outspoken pig, and Snowball, the most eloquent pig, the animals continue to work the farm As with all societies, the animals have laws which must be obeyed. Their laws stated that animals shall never become like ...

The Impacts of Fast Foods on Obesity and Weight of College Students Assignment

The Impacts of Fast Foods on Obesity and Weight of College Students - Assignment Example These types of foods have been strongly criticized particularly due to issues of health. This paper intends to look into the impact of fast foods on obesity and overweight because these are health concerns that have originated very many diseases nowadays. Obesity is a medical condition whereby the body of an individual contains very high level of body fats to a level of occasioning adverse health impacts. Such a person is highly susceptible to diseases such as type II diabetes, heart diseases, osteoarthritis and certain types of cancers, among many others (Haslam and James, 2005). The fast spread of fast foods in restaurants has generated a lot of debate especially regarding the impact of such foods on the health of people. In fact, many nutritionists and health professionals have cautioned their clients against overconsumption of such foods as they claim their health risk can be massive (Abdollah, 2007; Mcbride, 2008; Mair et al. 2005). However, it is notable that the evidence that links fast food to obesity and gain in weight is not very convincing. Most of those who claim that it fast foods is responsible for obesity have conducted their research on very small samples hence narrowing the validity of their generalization. A recent study by Rosenheck (2008), on the relationship between fast foods and obesity, it was found that the results from observational studies have not been able to establish a link between obesity and fast foods. A couple of recent studies have paid attention to fast foods restaurant as possible contribute avenues of gaining weight (Philipson and Posner, 2008). Anderson and Matsa (2009) concentrate on the connection between obesity and feeding habits, whereby the related the presence of many restaurants around the highway in a  rural area and the eating habits. However, they found no credible link between obesity and restaurants.  Ã‚

The last of the three is Kinesthetic learners who learns best through physical demonstrations rather than seeing or hearing. Based on the completion of Learning Style Inventory (Bixler, 2010), I have determined I am a Kinesthetic learner also known as a tactile learner. My preference of learning is through a hands-on method. When I reflect on my study habits I found that this is true. I retain information better through moving, doing or touching. How can I make this learning style work best for me? I can make studying a more physical task. Instead of sitting down and reading I could stand, or snack while listening to lectures. Playing music in the background is something I often do and is also a useful habit to acquire for kinesthetic learners. One of the down falls of being a tactile learner is that I am easily distracted but allowing myself frequent study breaks will help with staying on track with any assignment. Through the Index of Learning Styles Questionnaire (Felder Soloman, n.d.), I have determined that I am not only a well-rounded learner but I also have very strong learning preferences that may affect my grasp on content. My results reflected that I am an active learner. I use a â€Å"Let’s try it out and see how it works,† study mentality. The questionnaire also reflected that when it comes to sensing and intuition I am a little bit of both. I like learning facts as well as theories. I have discovered through this questionnaire that  I am also well rounded when it comes to being a visual and verbal learner. Visual and verbal learning is the primary method of learning in today’s school system. I believe I reflected being fairly balanced in both because this is the learning style I’ve known based on the teaching style offered. Last, the questionnaire showed me that I am a sequential learner as well as a global learner. This result is accurate because different topics require a different way to complete or learn them whether it is step by step or absorbing bits and pieces to get the big picture. I have always known that I learned things better through hands-on experience. After taking both evaluations I realized I actually prefer many different learning styles but I am predominately a kinesthetic or active learner. I am sure this has changed many time based on my situation. Understanding what style works best for me is the first step in success. Being a physical learner will make taking online classes a bit difficult because online learning isn’t a hands-on kind of learning environment. My style may change throughout this course based on the situation or I will adapt my current learning style to somehow work with this environment. Throughout life we evolve and adapt to the different situations we are put in. This type of evolution occurs when it comes to our learning styles. As learners we adapt to the learning environment because it is more likely that our learning style will change before the teaching style changes. Every individual has a preferred learning style that works best for them based on their current situation. Each and every one of us is different and every different person has a different situation from the other which brings us to the conclusion that everyone has a different learning style. Education Philosophy Essay -- Philosophy of Education Statement Teache

Education Philosophy My life has been influenced greatly by teachers. Since I was a child, teaching is all I wanted to do. My mother is a fifth grade teacher. I have quite a few friends that are teachers. I have been fortunate to be influenced by some great teachers throughout my academic career. I love to be around kids and I like participating in the process of learning. I appreciate learning even today. I enjoy the learning process and hope to one day influence students in the future. I hope to one day become a high school social studies teacher. I enjoy history and geography, and I especially love politics and discussing current events. I like class discussions and letting different opinions express themselves. These are my beliefs regarding the education of a student. I would strongly agree that students should be active in the learning process. I would strongly agree that many students learn best by engaging in real-world activities rather than reading. I would strongly agree that schools should prepare students for analyzing and solving the types of problems they will face outside the classroom. I would also strongly agree that people are shaped more by their environment than by their genetic dispositions or the exercise of their free will. I would agree that material is taught effectively when it is broken down into small parts. I would agree that the curriculum of a school should be determined by information that is essential for all students to know. I agree that students should be immersed in the community’s problems, resulting in taking action or responsibility in planning a change. I do agree that the United States must become more competitive economically with counties such as Japan, and schoo... ...eaching methods would include programmed instruction, teaching machine, computer-assisted instruction, interactive multimedia, classical conditioning, operant conditioning, critical thinking skills, and cognitive problem solving. The classroom management style would include monitoring and observing events, using reward systems, and establishing rules. The evaluation of the student would include behavioral objectives and performance contracting. The teacher would be trained in the scientific method, a planner and user of behavioral objectives, controller of behavior, and an arranger of contingencies. I hope that one day I will be able to use these different philosophies in my own classroom. I hope that I keep these values, and be able to shape some young minds. I hope that I will become a great teacher, like the ones that I have experienced in my own career.

Death of Stressman Essay

One of the factors that results in the rise of Hitler is the death of a capable leader that brought stability and prosperity back to Germany. This capable leader is known as Gustav Stressman . Stressman died of a heart attack on 3rd October 1929. On behalf of the Weimar government, Stressman had negotiated the Dawes and Young Plans for more time to pay reparations to the Allies. In 1925, he also helped to end the Ruhr occupation by French and Belgian troops which had begun in 1923 and signed the 1925 Locarno Pact with France and Britain, promising to respect Germany’s Western borders. Thus, Germany’s relations with her former enemies improved and Germany was even allowed to be a member of the League of Nations. Therefore the years between 1924 and 1929 is considered as a golden age for Germany. Since then, Germany’s economic recovery depended on US loans. This made Germany vulnerable as it depended on America’s ability to keep lending. Therefore when Stressman died and The Great depression started in 1929, thousands of business closed and millions of Americans were thrown out of work. It also affected economies around the world. The loans from the United States of America on which Germany depended dried up. This resulted in the massive unemployment of many Germans which brought poverty to them. However, the Weimar government was helpless in solving the economic crisis without the leadership of Stressman which resulted in the German people to lose confidence in both the Weimar government and democracy. Therefore, the Germans started to search for any people or group that could help them . Hence ,due to the loss of confidence in the Weimar government, Hitler began to gain support from the Germans as they wanted a change of government and support Nazism which lead to the rise of Hitler.

NBC 4 has a lot of different departments where cer Essays

NBC 4 has a lot of different departments where cer Essays NBC 4 has a lot of different departments where certain people share different interest in. We have had multiple speakers come and discuss what they do at NBC 4 and what you may have to accomplish to get there. There was one speaker in particular whom I want to discuss because she talked about multiple topics. Our speaker was the President and General Manger Jackie Bradford who spoke about numerous topics about the news industry. Whenever someone is working in the field they learn lessons along the way and everything counts. There are 4 most important weeks during the learning process and that is the first 2 weeks and the last 2 weeks. Whenever you want to stand out more then others take more risk doing something out your comfort zone. When you learn lessons along the way, people also learn to own up to whatever you do and take responsibility. Working in the industry make sure you answer questions before they're asked, as far as doing more research doing. As far as questions, you want to ask questions that are not to distinct. First impressions are always good that include dressing professionally. NBC also is looking for people who has explanations of their background, knows their goals, and has a short, and long term plan. Must be genuine and ready for questions, and to be confident about your responses. Our speaker also spoke about digital media and how you can take advantage of it and even though it isn't your major. As long as you can do the work you are okay with doing digital media. In digital media you can have flexibility and have more input and get feedback on your stories. When you work in Digital Media being a great writer is very beneficial to you because you will have lighter years ahead of you. The best way to be a writer is just thinking of writing as a craft. Big media organizations are still arrogant about the future. Media companies will change a lot, but the smarter ones will change the way that gets them a position by cutting enough jobs to sustain themselves on a business level. Also working with Digital Media its good to have some type of investigation of information and work with database. When it comes to Sports Entertainment reporting you should know the business such as contracts and the salary. You should always be careful for working for free because the company can be u using and it won't be beneficial. Whenever somebody works in this field and others make sure that you show that you can learn throughout your career, and invest in yourself. Applying to a job in this field make sure that your looking for companies that who are looking for people who are different because you want to stand out more. We also had a speaker talk about speech communication majors and what it consists of. Speech communication money comes 95% from advertisement and little money comes from sub fees. Doing their ads, most if them come from other countries, while little that's left to come from the United States. They also talk about how the automotive commercials have the most revenue on TV. The speaker that we had gave us a lot of information about different jobs in the news industry, that didn't just have to do with NBC, but other companies as well. They told us what to do to make you a better person in the industry and what to look out for in the industry. I learned that NBC-4 had eight million viewers and I didn't know that it's Washington's television leader in the metropolitan region. In order to be in this industry you have to be aggressive and to never say no. There is nothing much better then to have good personality in this industry, and from you having a good personality then there is positive energy. If you don't understand something you should never be afraid to ask questions, because the more you know the more insight you have on the topic. I learned in this industry diversity is important because you want to be heard by every race. If you want to

Anna Pavlova – Ballerina Biography

Anna Pavlova Ballerina Biography Anna Pavlova, a famous Russian ballet dancer best known for changing the ideals for ballet dancers, was the first to make ballet popular in America and the rest of the world. Her love for classical ballet, determination to perform her love for the arts, influences and zest can still be evidently felt. Born on 31 January 1881, in St. Petersburg, Russia, Anna Pavlova was awestruck by the first ballet performance she watched and was intent on becoming a ballerina. Petite Pavlova entered the Imperial Ballet School in 1891 despite not having the preferred body type of a ballerina which was a strong, muscular and compact body. However, she gave the examiners enough confidence that she would work hard and excel. In the later years, Pavlova became one of the most astounding ballerinas. Young Pavlova was a talented and hardworking student. Training years were difficult due to her special physique. She was considered physically weak as she was small and thin coupled with highly arched feet un like the preferred body of a ballerina at that time. Pavlova was fed with cod-liver oil which tasted awful to her in the hope of getting the ideal body. Even so she remained slender. In order to improve faster, Pavlova tried imitating other ballet dancers. However her teacher, Pavel Gerdt taught her to  understand her unique dancing of daintiness and fragility and the importance to dance out those rare qualities. Her zeal for ballet was remarkable; she worked hard to strengthen her weakness and also with what she had instead of trying to be someone else. Her willingness to overcome these obstacles at such a young age is commendable. Soon, Pavlova grew in gracefulness and could stand in a way that her body formed a beautiful line where she was able to bend and twist her torso with ease and grace. Instead of mastering multiple fouettes turns and other technical steps that the muscular Italian style had induced at that time, Pavlova danced poetically and expressively. She stood out.. Finally upon graduation, Pavlova’s hard work paid off – she graduated as a first class dancer. After Pavlova’s school years, she continued training hard to improve her technique and even took extra lessons with different teachers such as Christian Johansson, Madame Sokolova and Nikolai Legat. Pavlova graduated at a time where virtuoso Italian ballerinas and a muscular ballet stylewas popular. Although Pavlova had mastered difficult steps and ballet technique, her highly arched feet were still too weak for the flamboyant pointe work. She experimented with ways to wear her pointe shoes with the hope of maximizing her potential. Through experiments, she discovered that by adding a piece of hard leather to the soles, the shoes provided better support. Many people thought this as cheating because ideally, ballerinas should be able to hold their own weight on their toes. However, her idea enabled her to perform better and allowed her to balance in her arabesque with poised and elegance inflicting less pain and  hence easier to sustain on pointe. In doing so, Pavlova created what is known as our pointe shoes today. Being able to go on pointe with ease and having a beautiful extension, flexible torso and tremendous feminine expressive dancing, Pavlova set a higher aesthetic of beauty in ballet where ballet dancers were able to perform with poise and elegance like a princess. With the recreation of the pointe shoes, there was a demand for brilliant and fancy footwork like jumps, multiple turns and balances and that of ballerinas performing on pointe.

The link between psychology and resistance to change Essay

The link between psychology and resistance to change - Essay Example Resistance to organizational change mainly comes from the people within the organization. This has been described as â€Å"psychological and organizational response† that comes from the attitude of people irrespective of the nature of change (Bovey & Hede, 2001). There are various reasons that have been identified which contribute to resistance to change on the part of employees. The most common factors that have been identified as contributing factors fuelling resistance are inadequate involvement of employees in the change management, ineffective process of communication and inadequate knowledge about change. The biggest manifestation of resistance to change occurs through expression of grievances, lower efficiency, aggressive attitude towards higher management and reduction of output of the organization. In order to understand the concept of resistance to change it is important to understand organizational change. Organizational change can be defined as an adaptation to the changing environment with an objective of improving the performance. There are two broad types of organizational change which can occur the first one can be defined as first order change and the second one is strategic or revolutionary change. In the former one the basic framework of the organization remains unaltered but in the second one the basic framework changes. The earliest mention of resistance was noticed in the article published by Lewin (1947cited in Gravenhorst, 2003) and the subsequent works published in the concept of group dynamics. The works of Coch and French (1948cited in Gravenhorst, 2003) had introduced the idea of resistance to organizational change but instead of properly shedding light on the concept they had rather introduced it as a motivational problem. The works of Watson (1969) had ide ntified that there are multiple stages in which the employees express their resistance to change. The first stage is characterized by
