Joseph Stalin, whose real name is Iosif Vissarionovich Dzhugashvili, was born on December 21, 1879 in the small town of Gori, Georgia. His family was poor and he was the only child of four to survive. His father was a shoemaker. He was a heavy drinker and died from wounds in a brawl when Stalin was 11 years old. His mother was a pious and hardworking woman. She wanted her son to have a good life so she entered him into priesthood. He attended elementary school run by the Orthodox Church and went on to the Orthodox theological seminary in Tiflis. There he joined a secret study group that opposed the Russian tsarist government. They discussed the radical ideas of Karl Marx and Stalin became a devout Marxist. Then a civil war erupted between Bolsheviks, Reds, and anti-Bolsheviks, Whites. In northern Russia, British, French, and U.S troops are capturing cities, as well as in the Russian Far East. Then Russia declares a policy of war communism with the state taking control of the whole economy causing millions of peasants to starve to death because the army confiscates grain for it own needs. Lenin proposes New Economic Policy which partially returns the market economy and provides a period of stability. A union treaty joins Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, and the Transcaucasia into the Soviet Union. The Soviet Union adopts a constitution based on dictatorship of the working class and the public ownership of land and the means of production. When Lenin dies, Joseph Stalin takes over. Stalin takes the situation of the Soviet Union and uses it to make himself in absolute control of the country. The world has gone far from what it was a century ago. As the world grows old, things on it, around it, and under it have changed considerably; many were even replaced by new ones.à As time goes on, man has invented and innovated much on four major human activity sectors: industry, energy, transportation and agriculture. In the two independent studies conducted in California relative to the health hazards of exposure to the soot in diesel emissions, researchers has released alarming result figures. In 2005 half a million of work and school absences, and at least 1,100 premature deaths were caused by breathing emissions from old diesel equipment. (Union of Concerned Scientists) So this is our prize for desiring to have this whole new world a highly industrialized one. The birth of high rise buildings, the construction of hospitals and transportation facilities, comes the birth of soot. Soot particles come directly from the tailpipe of engines and contribute to the unhealthy levels of particulate matter (PM) (UCS p.20). The fine particulate matter ââ¬Å"lodges like tiny razor blades deep in human lungsâ⬠according to Kevin Hamilton, who have led one of the two studies in California. Particulate pollution as Don Anair of the Union of Concerned scientists puts it is a ââ¬Å"silent killerâ⬠. What the world gets from industrialization are heart diseases, asthma and cancer. The compensation of development is hundreds of different chemicals from the diesel soot: sulfates, ammonium, nitrates, elemental carbon, condensed organic compound, carcinogenic compounds, arsenic, selenium cadmium and zinc. If one thinks that he can get rid of this pollution by going out of the city, he is wrong. The study even found out 2that soot particles is present at the South Pole. Suggestions as to solving this problem include basically replacing the old equipment with new ones. The sad thing about this is that most of these equipment last for 20 to 30 years. That would mean humans still have to have themselves exposed to this pollution for two to three decades before they will be replaced with less-emitting machines. Taking this fact: 3for every additional 10 micrograms of soot in a cubic meter of air is equivalent to 4.5% increase in heart attacks, how many lives will still be sacrificed in three decades? Being also a cancer-causing agent, soot pollution is not supposed to be taken for granted.à The California Air Resources Board reported that soot is responsible for 70% of the risk of cancer from airborne toxics. No one is safe and exempted from the deadly effects of diesel pollution, especially those who are living in soot-polluted areas like California. In fact, the 26% increase in mortality rate in such areas is attributed to soot-pollution. One does not have to be an environmentalist in order to know what is actually going on with the air we all breathe. We do not have to be scientifically inclined in order to understand what these research studies figures are all about. We just have to have a little concern of the future, especially the lives of the children who have no chance of altering their future. Their only choice, if it is a choice, is to live in the world where their parents brought them up: a polluted world brought about by industrialization. I am not against development, nor am I against industrialization. I am against the carelessness of the proponents of this development who obviously have overlooked the long term health effects of these processes. There is no escape to industrialization- the world, being governed by the laws of the material-driven humans, is inclined to be there. What has been done can no more be undone, and that is the sad truth. But there is a means of deterring the worst scenario: laws that will regulate the further use of soot-emitting engines or equipment. The government has to genuinely work hard to ensuring the safety of their people, as they are expected to do so. The human health and the environment can no more wait. The best time to act is now. The chance of this growing old world of getting a better place to live in is declining. We can no more turn back time, what has been lost is lost forever. Let us not lose what we still have today. The gothic elements of wuthering heights are made credible by the novels setting and narrators free essay sample

The unfriendly and gloomy atmosphere also contribute in helping characterize the people who live there, as Heathcliffââ¬â¢s behaviour is unfriendly itself, ââ¬ËI beheld his black eyes withdraw so suspiciously under their brows. ââ¬â¢ Lockwoodââ¬â¢s narrative is the other framework of the story, presenting the world as he sees it, bringing the reader closer to the action and truth of the novel at the same time as introducing them to the realities of the hostile and bewildering environment he encounters. He is intelligent and perceptive; uses calculated language marked by detailed factual description in order to emphasize aspects of the text. ââ¬ËThe young man had slung on to his person a decidedly shabby upper garment, and, erecting himself before the blaze, looked down on me from the corner of his eyes, for all the world as if there was some marked feud unavenged still between usââ¬â¢. His detailed description gives the text a sort of intensity that contributes to the drama and goes hand in hand with the intensity that two old enemies would have between them. All of this makes the gothic elements of the novel feel more credible. Overall the novelââ¬â¢s setting and narration does contribute to making the gothic elements more credible as the narration is based on first hand accounts giving the novel a sense of truth and the settings provide the perfect background and atmosphere for the horrific acts and violent pieces of action to take place.

After Muley hadtold Tom that his family was with his Uncle John, he set out to his Uncles house withhis old friend, Casy. It turns out that Casyhad gotten to Hooper Ranch before Tom and his family. Casy said that when he arrived,they were offering only two and a half cents per box of peaches. So, Casy and his newfriends protested. Thats why the wage went up to five cents, because were needed to pickthe peaches. But as soon as the cops stopped the protest, the wage was going back downto two and a half cents. Well after Tom had been beaten for what he did, he went backto his shelter and told his family what had happened. They all decided that they shouldleave immediately. But Tom hesitated. He knew that if they left, the cops would belooking for him. But Toms mother would not let him leave. She pleaded him to stay andfinally Tom agreed. He probably realized that he would be better off with his family forthe time being. So the Joad family left Hooper Ranch and set off to someplace else. Onthe road, the Joad family found a place where there we re many abandoned boxcars wherethey could live. They settled down there and began looking for a job. They found a jobpicking cotton, but that job soon was gone because of all the people that were picking. Tom on the other hand, was hiding. He had agreed with his mother to stay hidden atleast until his wounds healed up. Tom didnt like the idea, he still preferred going offsomewhere in his own, but he agreed to stay. Toms secrecy was soon broken when hissister Ruthie had threatened a girl that her big brother would beat up the other girlsbrother. But also Ruthie also mentioned that he had already killed two men and was outhiding waiting to kill another. As soon as Mrs. Joad heard about this, she knew she hadto tell her son to flee. Tom was not too happy about her offering him money to leave,but he knew it was for the best, so he took the money. After Mrs. Joad returned to theboxcars, it began to rain heavily and the cars became flooded. The Joad family knew theyhad to leave, so they did. The family found A rain-blackened barn that was just acrossthe highway (Steinbeck 498). The family went there and received shelter from the heavyrain. In conclusion, Tom was a person who took responsibility for his actions. He tookcare of his family when they needed him the most, but in the end, he did what was bestfor the family, he left them. He knew that if he had stayed, he would have only been aburden to them because the cops would have been looking for him. Para poder colectar el SSI (informacià ³n en inglà ©s) es preciso cumplir con ciertos requisitos de edad, incapacidad que son fijados por la ley y, al mismo tiempo, tener ingresos o recursos inferiores a una cantidad tambià ©n fijada legalmente. Por ejemplo, este programa aplica a los adultos solteros o a las parejas sin hijos y menores de 65 aà ±os que no sufren de ninguna minusvalà a pero carecen de medios para pagar por sus necesidades bsicas. El programa RCA es administrado por los estados por lo que la cantidad a recibir mensualmente por los beneficiados puede variar mucho. El importe que se entrega puede ser en dinero o en la forma de pago de facturas de electricidad, renta de la vivienda o calefaccià ³n o similares. Each and every person is unique in their ability, interest and background knowledge and it is safe to assume that there is a preferred style of learning that works best for them. The common styles of learning are visual, auditory, and kinesthetic but a style can be determines in further depth through many different evaluations. I have learned a few things about myself and my own personal learning style which I will share with you in this essay. There are three basic learning styles which are visual, auditory, and kinesthetic. Visual learners retain information best through visual aids such as graphs, pictures, films and demonstrations. Auditory learners absorb the most from hearing the material through lectures or oral discussions. The last of the three is Kinesthetic learners who learns best through physical demonstrations rather than seeing or hearing. Based on the completion of Learning Style Inventory (Bixler, 2010), I have determined I am a Kinesthetic learner also known as a tactile learner. My preference of learning is through a hands-on method. When I reflect on my study habits I found that this is true. I retain information better through moving, doing or touching. How can I make this learning style work best for me? I can make studying a more physical task. Instead of sitting down and reading I could stand, or snack while listening to lectures. Playing music in the background is something I often do and is also a useful habit to acquire for kinesthetic learners. One of the down falls of being a tactile learner is that I am easily distracted but allowing myself frequent study breaks will help with staying on track with any assignment. Through the Index of Learning Styles Questionnaire (Felder Soloman, n.d.), I have determined that I am not only a well-rounded learner but I also have very strong learning preferences that may affect my grasp on content. My results reflected that I am an active learner. I use a ââ¬Å"Letââ¬â¢s try it out and see how it works,â⬠study mentality. The questionnaire also reflected that when it comes to sensing and intuition I am a little bit of both. I like learning facts as well as theories. I have discovered through this questionnaire thatà I am also well rounded when it comes to being a visual and verbal learner. Visual and verbal learning is the primary method of learning in todayââ¬â¢s school system. I believe I reflected being fairly balanced in both because this is the learning style Iââ¬â¢ve known based on the teaching style offered. Last, the questionnaire showed me that I am a sequential learner as well as a global learner. This result is accurate because different topics require a different way to complete or learn them whether it is step by step or absorbing bits and pieces to get the big picture. I have always known that I learned things better through hands-on experience. After taking both evaluations I realized I actually prefer many different learning styles but I am predominately a kinesthetic or active learner. I am sure this has changed many time based on my situation. Understanding what style works best for me is the first step in success. Being a physical learner will make taking online classes a bit difficult because online learning isnââ¬â¢t a hands-on kind of learning environment. My style may change throughout this course based on the situation or I will adapt my current learning style to somehow work with this environment. Education Philosophy My life has been influenced greatly by teachers. Since I was a child, teaching is all I wanted to do. My mother is a fifth grade teacher. I have quite a few friends that are teachers. I have been fortunate to be influenced by some great teachers throughout my academic career. I love to be around kids and I like participating in the process of learning. I appreciate learning even today. I enjoy the learning process and hope to one day influence students in the future. I hope to one day become a high school social studies teacher. I enjoy history and geography, and I especially love politics and discussing current events. I like class discussions and letting different opinions express themselves. These are my beliefs regarding the education of a student. I would strongly agree that students should be active in the learning process. I would strongly agree that many students learn best by engaging in real-world activities rather than reading. I would strongly agree that schools should prepare students for analyzing and solving the types of problems they will face outside the classroom. I would also strongly agree that people are shaped more by their environment than by their genetic dispositions or the exercise of their free will. I would agree that material is taught effectively when it is broken down into small parts. I would agree that the curriculum of a school should be determined by information that is essential for all students to know. I agree that students should be immersed in the communityââ¬â¢s problems, resulting in taking action or responsibility in planning a change. I do agree that the United States must become more competitive economically with counties such as Japan, and schoo... ...eaching methods would include programmed instruction, teaching machine, computer-assisted instruction, interactive multimedia, classical conditioning, operant conditioning, critical thinking skills, and cognitive problem solving. The classroom management style would include monitoring and observing events, using reward systems, and establishing rules. The teacher would be trained in the scientific method, a planner and user of behavioral objectives, controller of behavior, and an arranger of contingencies. I hope that one day I will be able to use these different philosophies in my own classroom. I hope that I keep these values, and be able to shape some young minds. I hope that I will become a great teacher, like the ones that I have experienced in my own career.

We have had multiple speakers come and discuss what they do at NBC 4 and what you may have to accomplish to get there. There was one speaker in particular whom I want to discuss because she talked about multiple topics. Our speaker was the President and General Manger Jackie Bradford who spoke about numerous topics about the news industry. Whenever someone is working in the field they learn lessons along the way and everything counts. There are 4 most important weeks during the learning process and that is the first 2 weeks and the last 2 weeks. Whenever you want to stand out more then others take more risk doing something out your comfort zone. When you learn lessons along the way, people also learn to own up to whatever you do and take responsibility. Working in the industry make sure you answer questions before they're asked, as far as doing more research doing. As far as questions, you want to ask questions that are not to distinct. First impressions are always good that include dressing professionally. NBC also is looking for people who has explanations of their background, knows their goals, and has a short, and long term plan. Must be genuine and ready for questions, and to be confident about your responses. Our speaker also spoke about digital media and how you can take advantage of it and even though it isn't your major. As long as you can do the work you are okay with doing digital media. In digital media you can have flexibility and have more input and get feedback on your stories. When you work in Digital Media being a great writer is very beneficial to you because you will have lighter years ahead of you. The best way to be a writer is just thinking of writing as a craft. We also had a speaker talk about speech communication majors and what it consists of. Speech communication money comes 95% from advertisement and little money comes from sub fees. Doing their ads, most if them come from other countries, while little that's left to come from the United States. They also talk about how the automotive commercials have the most revenue on TV. The speaker that we had gave us a lot of information about different jobs in the news industry, that didn't just have to do with NBC, but other companies as well. They told us what to do to make you a better person in the industry and what to look out for in the industry. I learned that NBC-4 had eight million viewers and I didn't know that it's Washington's television leader in the metropolitan region. Anna Pavlova Ballerina Biography Anna Pavlova, a famous Russian ballet dancer best known for changing the ideals for ballet dancers, was the first to make ballet popular in America and the rest of the world. Her love for classical ballet, determination to perform her love for the arts, influences and zest can still be evidently felt. Born on 31 January 1881, in St. Petersburg, Russia, Anna Pavlova was awestruck by the first ballet performance she watched and was intent on becoming a ballerina. Petite Pavlova entered the Imperial Ballet School in 1891 despite not having the preferred body type of a ballerina which was a strong, muscular and compact body. However, she gave the examiners enough confidence that she would work hard and excel. In the later years, Pavlova became one of the most astounding ballerinas. Young Pavlova was a talented and hardworking student. Training years were difficult due to her special physique. She was considered physically weak as she was small and thin coupled with highly arched feet un like the preferred body of a ballerina at that time. Pavlova was fed with cod-liver oil which tasted awful to her in the hope of getting the ideal body. Even so she remained slender. In order to improve faster, Pavlova tried imitating other ballet dancers. However her teacher, Pavel Gerdt taught her toà understand her unique dancing of daintiness and fragility and the importance to dance out those rare qualities. Her zeal for ballet was remarkable; she worked hard to strengthen her weakness and also with what she had instead of trying to be someone else. Although Pavlova had mastered difficult steps and ballet technique, her highly arched feet were still too weak for the flamboyant pointe work. Through experiments, she discovered that by adding a piece of hard leather to the soles, the shoes provided better support. Many people thought this as cheating because ideally, ballerinas should be able to hold their own weight on their toes. The Gains and Losses of Educating Rita The purpose of my essay is to explain, in considerable detail, the gains and loses of Educating Rita for it being a two-handed play. The play, ââ¬ËEducating Ritaââ¬â¢, written by Willy Russell is very entertaining, although there are only two characters, hence the reason it is a two-handed play. The grounds on which I found it entertaining is based upon the basic plot outline which consists of Rita, a working-class Liverpool girl, with a hunger for education and Frank, her lecturer, attempts to do just that, but, their relationship changes, they become close. Close in the sense by not sharing your average perception of a student and teacher relationship. They drink and smoke together. This soon changes when Ritaââ¬â¢s knowledge expands with the help of Frank and summer school. Summer school also helps to boost Ritaââ¬â¢s confidence enabling her to socialise with educated people like herself. Rita divorces her husband, Denny, and gets a new flat mate called Trish. Trish has a great influence on Rita until, she discovered, Trish tried to commit suicide. Rita and Frank soon fall out however; Frank still enters her for an exam. This concludes in Rita passing her exam and fulfilling her dream of an education. She soon becomes Frankââ¬â¢s friend again. Other characters, such as Trish and Denny are never seen but talked about. All the scenes, throughout the play, are set in the Open University where Rita is being taught. To help me carry out this essay I watched the film, ââ¬ËEducating Ritaââ¬â¢, in order to identify any gains and losses for the two ââ¬â handed play. After having read the play and seen the movie I am struck by the large number of differences. Many small details have a great impact on how the story can and is being perceived. The movie offers a great deal of background information on events that are relevant to the play. This is an example of a big loss for ââ¬ËEducating Ritaââ¬â¢ being a two-handed play. By seeing the deleted scenes of the play you get a greater understanding of the sequence of events. Being unable to see the deleted scenes may have lead to confusion and misinterpretation resulting in the play not achieving its full potential. The play is much more predictable in the sense that numerous actions will not take place on stage. For example, nothing taking place outside Frank's office can be seen by the audience. All action is unavoidably confined within the office. At the point in the play where Frank invites Rita to his home for dinner the audience are not set up for anything

Careers Essay
Section A- Key Terms Balanced Decision-Making: Making good choices based on a mixture of logic and intuition. This is useful in a number of situations, and when making a good decision, displays discipline and intelligence. For example, if you have work at 9 am the next morning, and youââ¬â¢ve been invited to go out with your friends the night before, your logic may tell you not to, but your intuition wants to. Making the balanced choice depends on which is a higher priority, work or socializing. Credentials: Experiences that make you more qualified for a job. Employers will see these as accomplishments. Credentials are useful as they show that you are able to apply yourself to a task and complete it, which is useful information for employers, as well. They look good on your resume and make for a good alternative if you donââ¬â¢t have any work experience. Transferable Skills: Abilities that you can apply from one situation to another. This is useful because it will make you a candidate for a wider variety of jobs, and once you have a job, you will be able to adjust to different situations, good and bad, that may happen on an average day at work. Network: Connections with other people. Networking is useful when looking and applying for a job. If you have a large network, then you can talk to them about your need for employment, and have a higher chance of getting an interview. When applying for a job itââ¬â¢s useful as you have a wider variety of references to choose from. Reference: A person on your application form who employers can contact if they want someone elseââ¬â¢s opinion on you. They will vouch for your experience, credibility and record. References, when chosen well, can be extremely useful. These references may notice things about you that you wouldnââ¬â¢t be able to share or necessarily know while being interviewed. In other words, they have an outsiderââ¬â¢s perspective. Section B- Short Answers 3) The best way to contribute to your community is through volunteer work. But, if youââ¬â¢re looking to further your career ambitions at the same time, then you should be mindful to where you volunteer. For example, if you wanted to be an English teacher, volunteer at the library. If you wanted to work in PR, volunteer at Free the Children. Volunteer work is always great on a resume no matter where itââ¬â¢s from, but itââ¬â¢s even better when employers see that youââ¬â¢ve gotten a little taste of what they have to offer. Another way to contribute to your community is to organize a fundraiser. This looks great on a resume as it shows that you have leadership and communication skills, as well as a good heart. If you wanted to work at a hospital, donate all the proceeds to Make a Wish. If you want to work in art, donate the proceeds to sketch. The last and most general way to contribute to your community is to organize a garbage pick-up. This also shows that you have leader ship and communication skills. But, as all jobs and businesses are looking for ways to go green, this shows that youââ¬â¢re in that mindset and can bring it to where ever you work. 4) There are many things you can do to find out what post-secondary option is best for you. The first way Iââ¬â¢d acquire knowledge on this subject is talk to family members and older friends. Make sure to get a wide variety in such as university and college graduates, as well as people who only have a high school diploma. Ask them how they feel about their education and qualifications, as well as how they feel about their career or job. Ask them for advice on finding out whatââ¬â¢s best for you, and how they found out what was best for them. Another way Iââ¬â¢d educate myself is to do research. Look up the employment rates of university, college and high school graduates. Think of careers or jobs that you would like to have in the future and look up what you would need in order to get that profession. Lastly, Iââ¬â¢d tour universities and colleges to get a feel of them. Iââ¬â¢d ask myself if I enjoyed one more than the other, and if I could see myself being at one. 5) A couple steps you should take when looking for work are: One- update your resume. Two- network. Tell your family, friends and your friendsââ¬â¢ family that youââ¬â¢re looking for work. Three- look around. There are many worthwhile and credible jobs that are advertised whether it is online, in the paper or at centres. Four- donââ¬â¢t waste time! Hand out resumes to all the options that you receive. Five- communicate. Call to the places that you handed in resumes. It shows that youââ¬â¢re eager and will give you attention. 6) My first piece of advice to a friend who had a job interview would be to print off extra resumes and to have a separate sheet with a list of references. Also make sure to have all certificates for your credentials in case they want proof. Second, Iââ¬â¢d tell them to arrive on time! Or even better, be early. Itââ¬â¢ll give you time to relax and think over what youââ¬â¢re going to say. Itââ¬â¢s the first impression that theyââ¬â¢ll have of you, and being early or on time shows them that you can keep that up if you were to work there. Lastly, Iââ¬â¢d tell them to be confident. Smile and give them a good handshake, wear a nice outfit, and donââ¬â¢t be afraid to ask questions. Section C- Essay Question 1 To be blunt, the Careers course is too simple. There isnââ¬â¢t much homework, itââ¬â¢s very easy to get by without studying for tests and a lot of it is really just common knowledge. If you really want to get the full experience, the course should be ââ¬Å"beefed up.â⬠People have mentioned adding a co-op element in the course, which is a great idea. It allows students to apply their knowledge from in-class into the workplace, without having the stress of pay cheques or getting fired. If this was added to the curriculum, it would be even better if the work you did could be added to your resume under experience. The only issue would be that a lot of students wouldnââ¬â¢t want to work without getting paid, and would be upset if it werenââ¬â¢t to count for volunteer hours. Many students are probably happy with getting by with the minimal curriculum we have now. Overall, the co-op idea would definitely be a good experience for them whether they liked it or not, and would definitely enrich this course. Although it is believed that the course should be enriched, it should not be bumped up to be taught in grade 12. This is another way people have said that Careers could be enriched, because they would be able to use more complex terms and advanced language. But, the point of the course is not to expand your vocabulary; itââ¬â¢s to get you educated about your future. Also, many schools offer the course in grade 11, so thatââ¬â¢s a compromise between grade 10 and 12. Learning the course in grade 10 allows students time to process information, as well as have working experiences such as volunteer work and jobs, and also to consider what they might like to do for a career. If students were to learn the logistics in grade 12, theyââ¬â¢ve missed out on valuable information that could have helped them apply and keep high school jobs. In conclusion, Careers is a simple but effective course. It gives you a lot of useful information that you can benefit from for the rest of your life, gets you thinking about your future and tests your common knowledge. There are definitely many adjustments that can be made, though. Co-op would be great so students could test the knowledge that theyââ¬â¢ve learnt in class to see if they thoroughly understand. If co-op was added, Careers should become a full course so students can have half the time for learning and preparing, and the other half for experiencing.
